Stair Sainty Gallery

In today’s contemporary world, this exhibition will highlight the diverse paintings executed in continental Europe during the 19th and early 20th centuries and explore how their now historic styles were at the time seen as the height of contemporary art.

‘All art was contemporary once…this may seem obvious, but it is worth remembering that historical perspective makes us better judges of the past than those who live through it. This is particularly relevant today when the values ascribed to the contemporary may bear no relation to that of art of past centuries. This exhibition will explore the ups and downs of the art market and how we can learn more from the art of the past than perhaps we first realised.'
