Asian Art in London

Join a special talk, as part of Asian Art in London, reflecting on contemporary Chinese Ink paintings as held in the Ashmolean Museum.

Professor Shelagh Vainker, Curator of Chinese Art at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, will reflect on a selection of works from the Ashmolean’s collection of contemporary Chinese Ink paintings, one of the most important outside of China, including artworks by the influential master Lui Shou-Kwan, Chao Chung-Hsiang and Wang Tiande.

Shelagh Vainker

Shelagh Vainker is Curator of Chinese Art at the Ashmolean and Associate Professor of Chinese Art in the Faculty of Oriental Studies. She was previously Curator of Chinese Ceramics and Textiles at the British Museum. Other appointments include President of the Oriental Ceramic Society 2012–15, and J.S. Lee Memorial Senior Fellow 2012–13 (Beijing). She has published widely on Chinese art including books on ceramics and silk, articles on many aspects of the material culture of the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127) and a series of collection and exhibition catalogues on modern Chinese painting.

The Ashmolean Museum

The Ashmolean is the University of Oxford’s museum of art and archaeology, founded in 1683. Their world famous collections range from Egyptian mummies to contemporary art, telling human stories across cultures and across time. As a world-class museum and cultural destination the Ashmolean broadens their reach, welcoming everyone and offering experiences which are innovative, inspiring and relevant. They preserve, enhance and share their collections and knowledge to promote research, learning and enjoyment, to enrich lives and expand our understanding of the world and our shared humanity.
