Cromwell Place

Brompton Design District

Convivial, constructive, collaborative: what can designers learn from working together? A discussion with panellists including artist, designer, maker, Rio Kobayashi, Director of Grymsdyke Farm and Co-Director of Material Architecture Lab (MAL), The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, Guan Lee.

Collaboration is one of the primary tools through which designers work, but what does the process actually amount to? While collaborative design promises rich interplay and an attention towards different contexts, the projects and objects that are labelled as “collaborative” often end up feeling cursory or superficial. The panel will discuss how designers, makers and researchers can work with one another to make their time spent together – and any associated outcomes – feel valuable, rigorous and constructive for all involved.

About the Hosts

Brompton Design District

Brompton Design District

Initiated by South Kensington Estates, a company with a history woven into the fabric of the district for over 200 years, Brompton Design District was established in 2007 to foster a space where new design can flourish. The aim was to revitalise the heritage of the area as a place where people come together to share, enjoy and learn about design in its broadest sense; design, culture, fashion and food.

It is the leading District during the annual London Design Festival with a dedicated programme of temporary exhibitions. Brompton’s programme, curated by Jane Withers Studio, has combined pioneering and innovative contemporary exhibitions, set in an area of London known for its iconic, international design brands.

For the 2022 programme, exhibitions as part of Brompton Design District will highlight contemporary design under the theme ‘Make Yourself at Home’. Designers have been invited to reflect on the many meanings of the places we call home and the role of design in transforming these spaces.
