Social not solutions: should we shift the way we design for change? A discussion moderated by Disegno with panellists including founder and director of All in Awe, Eva Feldkamp, and POor Collective.

Social not solutions: should we shift the way we design for change? The design world often strays into solutionism, developing objects, systems and places aimed at fixing urgent social issues. While these topics undeniably need attention, how effective are these projects and what kind of impact can designers actually have on complex issues? This panel invites designers and architects who have worked on social projects to examine how interventions, even on a small scale, can have a positive effect. What skills in the designer’s arsenal can positively shape people’s lives and how should designers organise themselves to make best use of their particular training?

About the Hosts

Brompton Design District

Brompton Design District

Initiated by South Kensington Estates, a company with a history woven into the fabric of the district for over 200 years, Brompton Design District was established in 2007 to foster a space where new design can flourish. The aim was to revitalise the heritage of the area as a place where people come together to share, enjoy and learn about design in its broadest sense; design, culture, fashion and food.

It is the leading District during the annual London Design Festival with a dedicated programme of temporary exhibitions. Brompton’s programme, curated by Jane Withers Studio, has combined pioneering and innovative contemporary exhibitions, set in an area of London known for its iconic, international design brands.

For the 2022 programme, exhibitions as part of Brompton Design District will highlight contemporary design under the theme ‘Make Yourself at Home’. Designers have been invited to reflect on the many meanings of the places we call home and the role of design in transforming these spaces.
