Maud & Mabel

Maud & Mabel is pleased to present Weightless, an exhibition showcasing the works of eight established and emerging international artists from Japan, Sweden, Italy, the US and UK.

Uniting these artists’ diverse array of disciplines is a pervading delicate appreciation and intimate understanding of their mediums, enabling them to mould solid materials such as clay, wood and metal into light, flowing forms - emanating a sense of weightlessness. Collectively, the pieces exude an ethereal, playful quality from their respective manipulations; defying the standard sensorial connotations of the raw materials from which they were born. These investigations display an acute sensitivity towards the essence of a given material; at once both distilled to its basic elements and changed - a transmutation allowing for new possibilities and encouraging fresh perceptions.

Featuring works by Emelie Abrahamsson, Craig Bamford, Marco Bellini, Krista Mezzadri, Gaku Nakane, Koichi Onozawa, Hideo Sawed and Maiko Tsutsumi.

About the Hosts

Maud & Mabel

Maud & Mabel

Founded in 2012 by Karen Whiteley, Maud & Mabel is today situated in Hampstead Village, London, where the gallery curates formative exhibitions reflective of crucial current dialogues in art and craft.

Since its inception, Maud & Mabel have formed relationships with over 90 artists from around the world and, through it’s selection of handcrafted pieces, are proud to represent to an ever-growing international audience an inspiring roster of emerging and well-established artists - honouring their art with mindful attentiveness to the stories and ambience of each work. With a sustained meditation on works both sculptural and functional, the intimate gallery space is carefully curated to exhibit pieces uniting contemporary aesthetics and innovation with traditional techniques rooted in craft traditions. The collections at Maud & Mabel are grounded in the Japanese aesthetic theory of shibumi — the balance of simplicity and complexity, perfection and imperfection. Following a clear artistic vision, the gallery presents artworks encapsulating coherence in contrasting elements and a refined subtlety in intricate artistry.

Over the years, Maud & Mabel has shared its vision and perceptive selection of art beyond the physical gallery space; connecting its global clientele of collectors and designers with artists around the world. Alongside collaborating with designers on major projects, Maud & Mabel are honoured to present standalone unique pieces and exhibition collections throughout the calendar year. Dedicated to promoting fine crafts guided by its aesthetic principles, Maud & Mabel both exhibit collections within the gallery space and externally participate in major art and craft fairs.
